Fear of Failing

Fear of Failing

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11-12

Devotion

A few years ago, I was asked to lead girls for a discipleship training program. I had no confidence I could do it and even laughed when I was asked. I had no leadership experience. I felt like I needed training, experience, and a lot more of a leadership personality to take on such an important role.

What I was really afraid of was failing.

Even though I felt ill-equipped to take on this challenge, I chose to do it anyway. The people around me pushed me forward and spoke boldly to me, just as God spoke boldly to Moses. I discovered I was good at leading others and even enjoyed it. Since then, I've been eager to take on leadership opportunities. I'm thankful God led me to discover this ability within myself all those years ago, but now I realize I've become comfortable. To be honest, I’m scared I might fail. How do I move forward if I do fail? The fear of not knowing if I will do well at something overwhelms me. I run to where I‘m comfortable, and I don’t allow the Lord to show me other ways I can grow for his Kingdom.

Are you scared to fail? Do you ever find yourself serving God only in the ways you feel comfortable while avoiding that nudge you feel from God to try something new?

God came to Moses through a burning bush and told him to go and bring the Israelites out of Egypt. He asked God, “Who am I that should go?” (Exodus 3:11) and added, “Please send someone else” (Exodus 4:13). The Lord was speaking directly to Moses, and he still didn't want to go because he didn't believe he could do it. Isn’t that what we do as well? We can be quick to doubt ourselves or scared to step out of our comfort zone when the outcome is unknown. On the other hand, how will we ever discover our other talents if we don't step out in faith to attempt something new, even if we may not do it well? Trying something new is a great opportunity for us to be challenged and grow for God’s kingdom-work. Moses stepped out of his comfort zone even when he didn’t believe he was capable. What is holding you back from stepping out?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I praise you for being my Provider. I praise you for the many talents you have provided me. I pray you will provide me with opportunities out of my areas of comfort to honor you and serve others with the talents you have given me. I love and praise you, Amen.
