Psalms 121:1-2

Devotion:

“Great Is thy faithfulness … Great is thy faithfulness … Great Is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”

I grew up singing this beloved hymn. It has a lovely, deep, and heartfelt melody.

Many songs we just sing. Sometimes, we think about the words and allow those words to penetrate our hearts. Do I believe God is faithful? Do I believe God is faithful to ME? Do I live as if I believe that? What does faithfulness even mean?

Merriam-Webster says that faithfulness is being “firm in adherence to promises or steadfast in affection or allegiance.”

Do I really believe and live as if God is faithful or “steadfast in affection” to me? Doesn’t he realize how unworthy I am? Or how unlovable I can be? Yes. Yes, he does. And yet, he chose to be faithful to me and send Jesus to die in my place, regardless.

2 Kings 6 has a really interesting account of God’s faithfulness to his people. When I read it, I wondered if this might be happening for me, and I’m just unaware.

The Israelites are at war and feeling overwhelmed and outmanned. Is God with them? Do they believe that he is?

2 Kings 6:15-16 says,

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

God was with them and had provided an army “fully of horses and chariots” to fight on their behalf.

God is with us. God is fighting for us in unseen ways. His presence is near even when we don’t know it or feel it. He’s as close as simply saying his name. Maybe we need to pray, “Jesus, please help me.”

Psalms 121:1-2 says,

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth

He is there. He hears. He cares. Just call on him. He is there, even when we can’t see him or what he is doing on our behalf.
