Walk Humbly

Walk Humbly

He has shown you, O Mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Devotion

Can you remember a time when someone gave you grace for something you said or did to them? I can think of many times this has happened to me, but one that sticks out is the time my college basketball coach showed mercy on me for my actions as a young athlete. Coaches are always looking to guide, push, and encourage their athletes, but sometimes when you’re young, you just see the “pushing” part of the journey. One practice my coach was instructing me to “run wide” on the outside lanes of the basketball court, in order to get ahead of my defender to score easily. I felt I was “running wide,” but he kept insisting I do better, and that’s the moment my immaturity kicked in. I “ran wide” out of bounds, almost nose-to-nose with my coach to satisfy his request. Needless to say, if I were the coach during this episode, I’m not sure I would have shown the same grace he did to me that day!

Jesus is the greatest example we have for grace and humility. He served his disciples by washing their feet! He shows us it’s better to serve instead of being served. What a tremendous act of humility he bestowed upon them, showing how we should love one another and to humbly consider others better than ourselves. We know this world can be tough at times, yet there is so much good that we can miss if we don’t stop and “see” what God is doing in our daily lives. I recently had the opportunity to witness a group of individuals coming together to meet the needs of some beautiful people who are experiencing homelessness. They were providing meals, clothing, prayer, and community with no agenda … just being there to walk humbly with our brothers and sisters in Christ in their time of need!

I believe John 3:30 states best what it means to walk humbly with God: “He must become greater; and I must become less.” When God becomes greater in our lives, there is a shift in our perspective and the way we show grace and humility is changed. When we surrender to him and his will, God gives us the tools we need to love, show kindness, and extend grace to each other. Let’s honor God by walking humbly with him today.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, Thank you for the grace and mercy you give us each day. Help us to be mindful of our words and actions as we strive to walk humbly with you. Create in us a clean heart that we might be used by you to love others the way you do. It’s in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
